The Pocket of Possible

Junie’s jacket was old but faithful, soft at the elbows, warm where it mattered most.

It was the kind of jacket that remembered things— skinned knees, long walks, and mornings that smelled like rain.

On his way to school, Junie noticed something strange.

A pocket.

Not ripped.

Not borrowed.

New.

Stitched in with thread so thin it looked like moonlight. And when Junie touched it, it felt warm— as if it had been waiting.

Junie slipped his hand inside.

At first—nothing.

Then something brushed his fingers.

Light.

Folded.

He pulled out a paper bird.

Not the kind that sits still.

This one breathed.

It fluttered once and whispered,

“You’ll know where to go.”

The bird led Junie across the room to a girl with tears on her desk.

Junie placed the bird in her hands.

The tears slowed.

The bird folded itself back into quiet.

“Thank you,” she said. Junie nodded, surprised— but the pocket was already warm again.
